Like some others, we cut the cable.
No more 24 hour news networks.
No more 24 hour sports networks.
No more 100+ channels that we never even watched anyway.
So, what’s the biggest takeaway? We watch less TV. And that’s been a great thing!
Our family tries to have a pretty balanced life, and we weren’t couch potatoes by any stretch of the imagination. At least, so we thought. Cable TV has some pretty amazing features. The DVR allows you to rewind live TV. On-Demand allows you to watch anytime. I thought they were just cool features until my 3 year old started screaming that she wanted her favorite TV show, NOW.
So, we pulled the plug. It was surprisingly easy to break our 3 year old’s habit. We would just say that our TV doesn’t work like that anymore. So, instead of watching TV on demand, she learned how to ride a bike, and spent most of the summer outside riding her little red “rocket” bike.
So what do we do now? We have OTA, or Over The Air digital TV. It’s free.
So, financial savings have been significant. However, riding a bike, spending time with family, writing a book — there have been many other even more important benefits to getting rid of the cable.
